” “Dead shot…” echoed Jem “

Jem said this right after Atticus shot the crazy dog in one shot. It is found in chapter 10, page 98. This is an important quote because its part of a very important part of the book but it also shows us something about Atticus that wasn’t expected, but it also shows Scout and Jem that their dad isn’t as old as they think he is. It’s important to show Scout and Jem that Atticus isn’t as old as they think because it make them look at him in a different perspective.  I believe that if he had never shot the dog, Scout and Jem would still think that he is old and not want to be around their own dad. To me, this quote is what starts to form the structure for what is going to happen in the rest of the book.

Atticus is my absolute favorite character in To Kill a Mockingbird. The reasons his children think he’s so boring are the reasons why I love him so much as a character. When it was revealed that he used to be an amazing shooter with the nickname One-Shot Finch, I was pleasantly surprised. It looks like Atticus isn’t as boring as his children originally thought. I think his children will continue to respect him more as the time passes, especially when the trials start. It takes a lot for a white man to defend a black man, knowing it’s almost impossible to win against an all-white jury. There are also the horrible people of Maycomb who don’t even have the decency to insult him to his face. As his children grow older, they’ll start to respect him for the right reasons, meaning for not being One-Shot Finch but for being a great man that’s willing to help others.
